Welcome to the Historic
Matewan's
Matewan Massacre Play
Saturday
September 30, 2000
The 1st ever Matewan Massacre
Play was held in Matewan in front of city hall and was another huge success for the Historic Town of Matewan.
One of this years major treats at the
Matewan Homecoming 2000 was the debut of the long awaited Matewan Massacre
Re-enactment which was directed by Bridget Call & produced by Bill
Richardson. Bill & Bridget worked hard for several months
bringing together a cast of local people to create the re-enactment of the
now infamous gun battle between Baldwin-Felts agents and local coal miners
which occurred in Matewan on May 19th, 1920. The re-enactment took
place on the street in front of city hall at 2 p.m. Saturday. The
play drew hundreds if not thousands of spectators and by all accounts was
a huge success. Plans are already under way for future
presentations. Great Job Bridget!!
